Unless you live under a rock and/or you don’t care about mobile consumer technology (what are you doing here then??), iPad Mini was announced today. We’ve speculated for months on this launch and we’ve talked about whether Apple really needs to do this or not. Obviously, iPad Mini will sell in the millions but one big competitor is the Nexus 7 by Google/ASUS. Reason why we can call it a competitor, it wins in the price war, it’s one of the first 7″ tablets to run a quad-core processor and it’s running the latest version of Android 4.1. But during Apple’s event today, Schiller went on to say how the Nexus 7 was made with cheap materials, it was heavier, smaller screen and just couldn’t compare to iPad Mini on any level.
To a certain degree, I agree. As awesome as the Nexus 7 is, the hardware does feel like plastic and in comparison to iPad Mini, it is heavier and thicker. But the Nexus 7 is cheaper, has an HD screen and NFC. I would say it comes down to budget and ecosystem. If you’re on a budget, the Nexus 7 will give you some awesome features and apps. But if you can spring for iPad Mini, do it. It may not be an HD display but you get a super thin tablet, 2 cameras and 4GLTE capability (if you buy it as such). Which one will you buy? Which one will you buy me?
