Recently, Facebook has been getting a lot of press lately: new partnerships and new apps. It looks likes hacker group Anonymous has another target: Facebook. According to CNet, Anonymous has good reasons to take down this social network giant.
“Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.”
“Facebook is the opposite of the Antisec cause. You are not safe from them nor from any government. One day you will look back on this and realise what we have done here is right, you will thank the rulers of the internet, we are not harming you but saving you.”
Another thing to note is the date: November 5th. Back when I lived in England, this when the Brits would light up the sky with fireworks in honor of Guy Fawkes, a man who attempted to blow up the houses of Parliment in 1605. If Anonymous pulls this off, over 750 million users will not be able to access their pages. Since this announcement, Facebook needs to do something to increase their security. As a reminder, this is the group that took down the Playstation Network. If you need more proof, here’s their video Operation Facebook:
