Sony Is Finally Overhauling The PS3’s Online Store

Sean W. Oct 11, 2012 0

Revealed today is a future revamp of the PSN store for the PS3. This announcement was revealed by Eurogamer and this new store will feature a newer interface that looks much cleaner than the old look.  This update will be hitting the U.S. on October 23rd for the U.S. and Canada.

One feature revealed is a newly overhauled search.  The QWERTY on screen keyboard has been switched out with a column of letters  and the system will auto predict what it is you are trying to type including short terms like MW3 for Modern Warfare 3.  The games will be tagged in various ways to make finding content a better experience.  The other big difference is the look as the blue background with the boxes on top is being replaced with a smoked look that reminds some of the Windows 8 Metro interface but reminds me of some Google TV UIs.  Just looking at the screenshots, it already looks easier to find games on the store.

The sorting options are being improved when searching for games, where parameters like price, game type, release date and more can be used.  The system will suggest add-on content for you like DLC available for the game you are looking at.  This overhaul affects the video store as well as the gaming store for the PS3

No word on whether or not any of these changes are coming due to the acquisition of Gaikai, the cloud gaming service.  There were no information, tips, hints or rumors on whether or not the company will abandon the XMB (cross media bar) on the PS3 but I could see many wanting that interface to change also.  Leave a comment, let us know what you think of the new interface.
