Samsung might have to pony up $1.05 billion because of design patent infringement, but as far as Android vs iOS goes, this case has nothing to do with that. Well that’s according to Google. The Mountain View
internet search mobile advertising tech giant finally came out and made a statement about the whole case:
Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players – including newcomers – are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that.
So essentially, it sucks to be Samsung but when it comes down to it, their right. There wasn’t any patents that were directly connected to Android and its backbone. Most of the patents dealt with the phone’s/tablet’s physical design and Samsung’s TouchWiz overlay. Do you think Google should have stepped in earlier? True, Android wasn’t “hurt” but being one of the largest Android OEMs, Google is making a ton off of Samsung’s efforts and maybe Google should support the OEM a little more.
