Bought a new TV with 3D capabilities and are disappointed by the content available? Fear not early adopter, president of Insight Media Chris Chinnock thinks that will change soon. He points to over 140 films to be released in 3D theatrically between 2012 and 2015. He feels that “Sanity is returning,” and “Hollywood is understanding that not every film can be 3D.” Insight Media manages the 3D@Home consortium, whose mission is to “speed the commercialization of 3D into homes worldwide.”
If 2012 or 2015 is too far in the future for you, Chinnock believes that there will be about 100 Blu-rays released in 3D in 2011, and possibly double that in 2012. There will also be 10 more channels in 3D in 2011 and 25 channels planned for 2012 as well as many sporting events to be streamed.
These are still predictions, and it will also depend on customers buying 3D hardware. Strategy Analytics, a research firm “predicts 95 million 3D devices including gaming devices, set-tops and PCs will be sold worldwide this year.” Looking beyond, they are also projecting 900 million devices by 2014.
