We pointed out in December that YouTube/Google was in talks to acquire Next New Networks, a web based video production company. Looks like the talks were successful because YouTube has acquired them for less than $50 million, but the official number has not been released.
Google is looking to change the YouTube experience by having consistent, unique programing to keep people watching for hours, rather than a single video for minutes. Next New Networks attracts two billion views a month and that original programming will be coming to YouTube. Also, programming from Next New Networks will still appear in other internet video locations like Vimeo.
YouTube is also creating YouTube Next, a program to help video makers produce content by giving them grants and training. This sound very similar to the the program that Next New Networks has called Next New Creators, which performed a similar service that YouTube Next will perform.
Next New Networks was the video service that helped deveop YouTube’s biggest videos of 2010 glitter puke and the classic bed intruder. For fun, lets check out bed intruder again.
