Report: Microsoft to manufacture their own Windows 8 tablet, goes after iPad

Who hasn’t gone after the iPad? Right? Looks like there’s going to be an announcement where “Microsoft is set to unveil a tablet next week that will mark its entry into rival Apple’s territory” says The Wrap – a Hollywood blog whose source is close to the project. And this all happens before Microsoft’s Windows Phone Summit which is supposed to reveal more details on Window Phone Apollo this coming Wednesday. But this event is so classified that the location of where this will be announced has not been unveiled. However, their source has determined that it will take place in Southern California (L.A.) and has hinted the time of the event for Monday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

We contacted the Redmond-based company but they did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

Realistically, our gut instinct tells us that Microsoft will not be doing the manufacturing themselves but unveil 3rd party tablets. Lenovo, which was rumored to be the first tablet, and Nokia, which was rumored to produce a 10-inch Windows 8 tablet, were both reported back in March followed by the HP Slate 8 in April. Meanwhile, Dell has officially announced an enterprise-focused Windows 8 Tablet and Acer beat everyone to the punch by unveiling  two Windows 8 tablets.

Considering the possibilities, it could be one of these guys. We’d be damned if Microsoft is getting into the hardware business but we find that unlikely. We predict that the event will mostly delve into the new features of Windows RT, the Yammer acquisition (which is still a rumor) as well as any updates on Windows 8.
