Yesterday, a leaked photo from Apple.pro showed off what we believed was a small NFC transmitter. We believed this because as they pointed out, this little square box in the latest iPhone has never showed up in any of the past iPhones. Plus with Passbook coming out with iOS 6, that app would go perfectly with NFC. Well, it seems we might have jumped the gun and/or the bandwagon. According to reports from AnandTech:
Given the primarily metal backside of the new iPhone, it’s highly unlikely that NFC is in the cards for this generation. In fact, given the very little space at top and bottom dedicated to those glass RF windows, you can almost entirely rule it out.
Personally, I still have high hopes that Apple includes NFC in the next iPhone. They need to push forward and break a few barriers with this device and adding NFC would be the tip of the iceberg.
Sidebar thought: Wouldn’t it be funny if they added NFC to the iPad Mini but not the iPhone 5? There’d be Twitter threads of people paying awkwardly with their tablets. Something like “#2Big4NFC.
